A powerful report from CBS 8 this week explored the crisis of social isolation among older San Diegans that’s been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The holiday season can be difficult for seniors as it is, but even more so now during these extraordinary times,” said Joe Gavin, Chief Programs & Community Engagement Officer for the San Diego Seniors Community Foundation.
The piece cited a new report from the AARP Foundation that found social isolation among older people has reached epidemic levels during COVID-19. This isolation presents greater challenges for seniors than for young people.
“They may have retired from the workforce, they may have had a spouse pass away, they may have had health issues that restrict their physical mobility, they can have issues around hearing or vision,” said Andrew Renda, Associate Vice President of Population Health at Humana.
