This holiday season, SDSCF provided grants to numerous senior centers and nonprofits to bring cheer to seniors throughout San Diego. Thanks to the viewers of CBS 8, one agency was the beneficiary of an extra act of holiday kindness.
Serving Seniors operates the Potiker Family Senior Residence, an affordable housing complex for adults 62 and over in downtown San Diego. As a grant awardee, Serving Seniors purchased holiday plants to deliver to residents in tandem with their daily meals program.
CBS 8 launched a campaign to invite viewers to write letters expressing holiday well-wishes and messages of support to isolated seniors. SDSCF connected CBS 8 with Serving Seniors and our staff delivered over 100 holiday letters to be given to the residents.
CBS 8 covered the event that was highlighted by two seniors reading the letters they received and thanking viewers for their thoughtful messages.
Despite the challenges presented by COVID-19 in mobilizing community support, SDSCF was proud to join a leading nonprofit agency that serves older adults and a media outlet in delivering simple acts of kindness to isolated seniors. Simple acts, yet so meaningful.
The SDSCF Holiday Grant program is part of our No Senior Alone campaign. The grant funding delivered holiday cheer to nearly 2,500 older adults across San Diego. The holiday season can be a difficult time for seniors in ordinary times … what they have had to endure this year is heartbreaking.
Our mission as a foundation is to ensure that every senior has someone they can turn to and trust – not only at the holidays but every day. We do this by cultivating partnerships with community entities that support older people in our region. There is strength when the community is connected and SDSCF will continue our work to build relationships so that collaborations like this one can become common occurrences throughout the year.
