News Report: San Diego Lags Behind in Providing Resources for Senior Centers

KUSI News reported this week on San Diego Seniors Community Foundation’s recent senior center assessment, the first-ever report of its kind conducted in San Diego.

By 2030, more than a third of San Diego County’s population will be older than 55, totaling about 1.2 million individuals. The county’s senior centers, however, are underfunded and severely lacking the resources to properly manage the booming population of seniors.

Reporter Sasha Foo visited Serving Seniors’ Gary and Mary West Senior Wellness Center with SDSCF President and CEO Bob Kelly. This unique senior center, which offers twice-daily meals, classes and opportunities to socialize, in addition to health and dental clinics, has been lauded as a model for other senior centers to follow.
