For many older adults, a legacy is not measured by awards, job titles, or accomplishments. It is found in the people they have loved the communities they have helped build, the challenges they have overcome, and the wisdom they hope to pass on.
What the Showcase Captures
The Senior Legacy Project Showcase at the San Diego North County LGBTQ Resource Center which was funded by the San Diego Seniors Community Foundation through the Empower Grant, celebrates more than 20 LGBTQ+ older adults who came together to reflect on their lives and share the wisdom they hope to pass on to future generations. Through portraits and personal stories, the project captures both the challenges they faced and the communities they helped build.
Legacy, in Their Own Words
For some, legacy is about living authentically after years of hiding. One participant reflected, “I became part of a community where I could be myself, where I was safe, where I belonged, and where I felt valued.” Another described the Senior Legacy Project as “a beautiful gift I will always remember” and a place where they could finally feel safe being themselves.
For others, legacy is about creating change. One participant shared, “You are powerful, and you help shape the future for those who might not have to fight the same battles.” Another described a lifetime devoted to community and social justice, emphasizing the importance of continuing to fight for equality and ensuring future generations have a stronger foundation.
The stories also remind us that legacy isn’t necessarily about accomplishments or recognition. As one participant wrote, “I think about people. I hope to be remembered for the lives I touched, the hope I inspired, and the communities I helped strengthen.”

Finding Community Later in Life
Perhaps most importantly, the project demonstrates the power of connection. Many participants describe periods of loneliness or feeling like they didn’t belong, followed by the transformative experience of finding community.
One story captures that journey simply: “I grew up feeling like I did not fit in.” Another offers advice that reaches far beyond one generation: “Don’t be afraid to be who and what you are.”

Honoring the Past, Building the Future
The Senior Legacy Project is ultimately about honoring the past while building the future. These stories preserve the experiences of LGBTQ+ older adults while creating opportunities for younger generations to learn from their courage, resilience, and wisdom.
Every life leaves something behind. Sometimes it is an act of advocacy, a lifelong relationship, a friendship, a lesson, or simply the courage to live openly.
By sharing these stories, the showcase reminds us that older adults are not only carriers of history—they are an essential part of the community’s future.
